8 Important Things You Should Know Before Eating Sweet Potatoes
Their fiber can support digestion, but suddenly eating large quantities may cause gas, bloating, abdominal discomfort, or loose stools, especially in people with sensitive digestive systems. Sweet potatoes also naturally contain oxalates, which may be a concern for people prone to calcium-oxalate kidney stones. Those with a history of kidney problems may therefore need to pay closer attention to portion size and frequency.
Orange sweet potatoes contain large amounts of beta-carotene, and consistently consuming very high amounts can cause harmless yellow-orange skin discoloration known as carotenemia. Their potassium content can also matter for people with impaired kidney function or those taking certain medications that affect potassium levels. Anyone who has been advised to restrict potassium should discuss appropriate portions with a healthcare professional.
Preparation makes a major difference as well. Boiling, steaming, or simply baking sweet potatoes is generally preferable to deep-frying them or covering them with sugar and calorie-heavy toppings. Sweet potatoes are nutritious, but they are low in protein and shouldn’t normally replace an entire balanced meal. Moderate portions combined with protein, vegetables, and healthy fats allow you to enjoy their nutritional benefits without relying too heavily on a single food.
